Background of thesis work
Department Emerging Technologies at Volvo Construction Equipment is responsible for introducing future technologies internally, via research projects and demonstrators.
We have during several years developed a service robot with students at MdH. We now aim to have this robot performing a complete complex operation, including AI, vision computation, and multi-dimensional controls. At the same time we want to ensure high productivity and robust design. The specific operation we’ve chosen is serving coffee and cinnamon bun in a café. We believe that when we solve this specific work task with the productivity and robustness requirements we at the same time find solutions to several of those challenges we see to develop fully autonomous machines working in construction equipment.
Suitable background
Computational engineer at master level, or equivalent education profile, with specific interest in AI, robotics and programming.

Description of thesis work
We have a mobile robot platform with arm, gripper and vision system, in total 16 DOF, and including OS, SDK’s, communication, and several low level functionalities. We will now develop SW for human-machine conversation ordering coffee, vision functions for detecting humans, coffee utilities and cinnamon bun, and control functions to perform operation. We have a lot of SW already developed that we can re-use and adapt for this new work task. The thesis work will on a high level consist of:
• Define a use-case scenario for a robot serving coffee and cinnamon bun
• State-of-art in Intelligent Service Robotics
• Robustness and productivity analyze conclusions
• Develop a human-machine speech interface
• Develop vision detection of human, cup, bun and saucer
• Develop controls for locomotion, grasping, positioning and placing items
• Verify, evaluate, and demonstrate implemented work
• Write and present report
The thesis work is for 3 students, takes place at Volvo CE’s facilities in Eskilstuna, and is paid according to Volvo’s standard routines.
