The success of drones is heralding a new era of innovation and freedom of movement in all three spatial dimensions. Collaborative UAV operations drone swarms enable a new paradigm of using multiple unmanned platforms to carry out missions much faster and, in long perspective, fully autonomously. However, drone swarming concept has many challenges on its way before it will become a part of our daily life. Most important of which are effective spectrum utilization and collaborative operations inside and between the swarms.

In this Master Thesis we would like to study applicability and potential of multicast routing protocols for effective command, control, communications, computing and collaboration C5 of drone swarms. There are a multitude of uses for such a drone swarm. For instance, it might be a collaborative search and rescue operations, extinguishing forest fires on large geographical area, innovative agriculture etc. Multicast type of communication in highly dynamic environment, such as drone swarm, is a challenge must be solved prior to successful market introduction of the innovative solutions based on drone swarming.

Wireless P2P Technologies AB WP2P designs personal radio solutions for hunting, sports, outdoor tourism and drones. Hence in wireless networks multicast is perceived to be a very important network service. These networks have much lower data rate than most wired networks, thus network resource optimization is a key element. At WP2P we have an ongoing activity that study multicast in low data-rate wireless networks. This is a topic that has received some research attention but little practical implementation. We are looking for students that want to work with us on this topic.
In this activity we can offer a short Project topic, a short/long Master Thesis topic or a combination of both with maximum engagement up to 6 months and compensation 50 000 SEK. We expect Master students with excellent C/C++ programming skills, knowledge of Unix based systems and willingness to learn how to develop embedded applications.
